Z Constructor: Developing a 3D Metal Wireframe Builder

Z Constructor prototype being demonstrated in the workshop.

Z Constructor explores how digital fabrication can help create three-dimensional structures from metal wire. Developed by Leon Maryasin and Nir Badt, with guidance from Itai Laniado, the project asks how strong, accessible material can become useful objects at a human scale while keeping waste and cost in mind.

Developing a metal wireframe builder

The early vision focused on automating the construction process. As the project developed, the work shifted toward the functional mechanisms needed to guide, join and cut the wire. The presentation follows this progression through concept renderings, welding studies and prototype development.

Welding was a central part of the investigation. The team compared joining approaches and explored TIG welding, examining electrode angle, the gap to the workpiece, arc shape and current. These studies helped define the practical requirements for joining wire within the proposed system.

The mechanical development covered a wire-feed mechanism, a rigid guide tube for wire delivery, a cutting mechanism and an ergonomic handle for the carrying jig. The next steps identified in the presentation were to refine feeding and cutting, improve the handle, make objects and test the system with designers and makers.
